Dear hetalia fandom, about Prussia and the Teutonic Knights.
You’re normally good with making your historical!hetalia stuff at least mostly accurate, but here’s a quick piece of advice: Prussia and the Teutonic Order were NOT the same thing. If anything, Prussia was what happened when people in that region got sick of being bossed around by a bunch of jackasses with swords and a One World Order complex and asked Poland to come get rid of them. Which Poland did, because it was fucking badass in medieval times and the Teutonic Knights were, y’know. A bunch of jackasses with swords. And while the area that would later be known as the Kingdom of Prussia occuupied much of the same territory as the knights did, it has it’s roots more in Brandenburg than anywhere else and was, though not entirely secular, far from the super-totally-hegemonic-catholicism of the order.
(Note for any history bloggers who come across this- probably slightly innacurate and definatley oversimplified, and any errors are entirley my fault. And maybe wikipedia’s, but hey.)
Honestly the reason I never could ship Prussia and Hungary is the whole “she hits him but it’s funny ‘cause she’s all tsundere and shit lol” thing. Because it’s not like you’re excusing domestic violence there or anything. I mean, I’m not saying you can’t support abusive or otherwise screwed up pairings (‘cause god only knows I’ve sailed a few dysfunctional ships in my time) but the thing is you shouldn’t go around acting like they’re totes healthy relationships when they aren’t, y’know?
I like how half of the hetalia fandom is like
“Prussia probably died after he dissolved. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL AND ANGSTY GAHH I LOVE WHAT IT DOES TO THE STORY LINE”
and the other half is like
“NOPE HE’S ALIVE DON’T EVEN TALK TO ME DON’T SAY HE’S DEAD NOT LISTENING LA LA LA”
I fine with both provided it’s done well, but personally I think personifications only die when what they represent is forgotten. Prussia is still remembered and still has some bearing on human culture and thinking, particularly in Germany and other areas that were geographically or politically close to it, so Gilbert (and any other version of Prussia you choose to use) is probably gonna be around for a bit.
If being the admin of hetaliadiaries has taught me anything it’s that you guys love seeing Prussia and America being sad
